Dyskordianizm to współczesna religia założona około roku 1958 przez Kerry'ego Thornley'a i Grega Hilla, często opisywana jako "dowcip przebrany za religię" lub "religia udająca dowcip", nazwa pochodzi od rzymskiej bogini Dyskordii (grecka Eris). Nurt filozoficzny mający na celu podważenie samej istoty religijności, poprzez pozorowanie jednej z nich. Naśmiewanie się ze wszelkich założeń religijnych, łącznie z ich własnymi założeniami uznają za podstawową metodę osiągnięcia iluminacji.

Zasady dyskordianizmu są wyłożone w Principii Discordii, autorstwa Malaklipsy Młodszego (Gregory Hilla).

Kult ten sprzeciwia się autorytetom, regułom i tradycji.

Ruch dyskordiański jest również opisany w powieści Trylogii Illuminatus! Roberta Shea i Roberta Antona Wilsona.

Dyskordianizm stara się parodiować inne religie. Składa się ze swoistej mitologii, obrządku i pozornej hierarchii. Pod ostrzał zostają wystawione zarówno religie monoteistyczne, jak i buddyzm czy hinduizm. Parodia jest w tym przypadku próbą przedstawienia pewnych treści oraz ukazania paradoksów związanych z religią, nie zaś śmiechem dla śmiechu czy usiłowaniem obrazy osób wierzących.

Bogini Eris (Eryda, Dyskordia) w dyskordianizmie spełnia funkcję symbolicznej towarzyszki i przyjaciółki, będąc przeciwieństwem Boga w religiach monoteistycznych. Objawia się Malaklipsie Młodszemu i Omarowi Ravenhurstowi, by oznajmić, że ludzkość jest wolna. Jej atrybutem jest jabłko niezgody, a symbolem liczba 23.

Pięć przykazań dyskordianizmu, podstawa wiary. Są sprzeczne ze sobą w zamierzeniu, będąc przez to parodią innych religii:

1.Nie ma Bogini poza Boginią, która jest Twoją Boginią. Nie ma Ruchu Eryzyjskiego poza Ruchem Eryzyjskim, którym jest Ruch Eryzyjski. A każdy Korpus Złotego Jabłka jest ukochanym domem Złotego Robaka.

2. Każdy dyskordianin powinien używać Oficjalnego Dyskordiańskiego Systemu Numerowania Dokumentów.

3. Każdy dyskordianin w początkowej fazie oświecenia powinien w każdy piątek udawać się w zaciszne miejsce w celu radosnego spożycia hot doga. Ta ceremonia jest jednocześnie aktem walki z popularnymi, pogańskimi zabobonami: katolickiego chrześcijaństwa (niejedzenie mięsa w piątek), judaizmu (niejedzenie wieprzowiny), hinduizmu (niejedzenie wołowiny), buddyzmu (niejedzenie mięsa) oraz dyskordianizmu (niejedzenie bułek od hot dogów).

4. Każdy dyskordianin powinien się wstrzymać od jedzenia bułek od hot dogów, albowiem taki był kaprys Naszej Bogini, kiedy zmierzyła się z Afrontem Pierworodnym.
5. Żadnemu dyskordianinowi nie wolno wierzyć w to, co czyta.

Dyskordianizm przedstawia filozofię ukrytą pod warstwą śmiechu. Łączy filozofię zachodnią z filozofią buddyzmu zen (koany), taoizmem (Święte Chao) i żartem. Z tego powodu nazywany jest "zenem dla okrągłookich". Humor i drwina mają odzwierciedlać dystans wobec rzeczywistości, który przekłada się na agnostycyzm filozoficzny. Dyskordianie podają w wątpliwość wszystko, twierdząc że:

Tym samym dla wyznawców Eris nie istnieją rzeczy święte, ponieważ wszystko może zostać podane w wątpliwość i wyśmiane. Śmiech jest także drogą do szczęścia.

Ponadto dyskordianizm postrzega chaos jako pozytywną siłę twórczą. Przeciwny jest podziałowi na konstruktywny porządek i destruktywny nieład.

Niekiedy dyskordianie zrzeszają się w koteriach, które mogą być zorganizowane hierarchicznie, choć według Principii Discordii każdy człowiek na świecie jest prawdziwym papieżem, a hierarchia i podziały są tylko złudzeniem.

Diskordianismus (z lat. Discordia, též erisianismus z řec. Eris) označuje společenství, které se prezentuje ve formě náboženství nebo parodie na náboženství.

Členové tohoto společenství označují diskordianismus jako pantheistické neopohanské náboženství či filosofie. Někteří diskordianismus považují za promyšlený vtip vydávající se za náboženství, jiní ho považují za náboženství vydávající se za promyšlený vtip. Odpověď v duchu diskordianismu je však: „Diskordianismus je náboženství, které se vydává za promyšlený vtip vydávající se za náboženství.“ Ať je pravda jakákoliv, humor je spolu s chaosem jedním z ústředních prvků diskordiánské filosofie. Diskordianismus bývá na jednu stranu srovnáván s Wiccou a dalšími neopohanskými náboženstvími, na druhou stranu se zenem a taoismem. Někdy je nazýván „dada zen pro západňany“. Od ostatních náboženství se vyčleňuje především naprostým odmítáním dogmat.

Na diskordianismus lze pohlížet i jako na prosté odmítnutí redukcionismu, dualismu nebo dokonce i falsifikovatelnosti.

Historie a vztah k ostatním náboženstvím

Moderní historie diskordianismu se datuje od padesátých let dvacátého století (křesťanského letopočtu), ale navazuje na římské, řecké a podle své vlastní mytologie ještě starší tradice. Eris, diskordiánská bohyně, pochází z řecké mytologie, později ji pod jménem Discordia vzali za svou Římané. S pádem římského impéria se ze scény na čas vytratila, aby se vrátila koncem padesátých let dvacátého století v Kalifornii.

Diskordianismus má blízko k dalším neopohanským náboženstvím, zejména těm formám Wiccy, které ctí Bohyni jako univerzální božstvo. Protože jsou ale obě náboženství nedogmatická a tudíž velmi variabilní, ne všechny formy musí mít k sobě blízko. Často ale diskordiáni označují Wiccu za diskordiánskou sektu, a naopak.

Pohled diskordianistů na ostatní náboženství

Diskordianismus považuje za přínosnou existenci jiných náboženství a ideologií vůbec. Náboženské konflikty jsou vždy poctou především Eris, bohyni sváru. Všeobecně je však zbytečná eskalace prostředků vedení konfliktů, např. násilí, diskordianisty považována za projev nezralosti.

Diskordianismus chápe jako podstatu náboženství zákaz pojídání špekáčku v pátek. Ať už je to páteční půst, nebo potravní tabu vůči hovězímu či vepřovému, nebo odpor k zabití živého tvora pro účel potravy, nebo nezdravost uzeniny, významné ideologické systémy se skutečně v tomto bodě důsledně shodují. Pojídání špekáčku je protiklad náboženství a duchovna vůbec.

Podle některých verzí diskordianismu nejde o špekáček, ale párek v rohlíku.

Filosofie

Základní dogma diskordianismu je blahodárnost sváru, sporů, konfliktů a soupeření vůbec. Při soupeření totiž to dobré zvítězí nad tím špatným. Humor, kreativita a svoboda jsou pak považovány za pozitivní kvality.

Biologická evoluce, ekonomický systém založený na konkurenčním prostředí nebo politický systém založený na soupeření politických stran - to jsou systémy, které v sobě mají zabudovaný prvek soupeření. Demonstrují tak principy diskordianismu.

Dalším dogmatem diskordianismu je odmítání všech dogmat.

Chaos

Zatímco většina náboženství uctívá principy řádu, diskordianismus lze interpretovat jako uvědomění si ne-řádu jako stejně důležitého aspektu reality. Pojem ne-řád (angl. disorder) však nelze zaměnovat s diskordiánskou interpretací pojmu Chaos, neboť ten je chápán jako podstata reality, svár řádu a ne-řádu. Tuto harmonii vyjadřuje Svaté Chao, symbol připomínající známější Jin-Jang, ve kterém ale jedna část představuje řád a druhá ne-řád. Slovo Chao bylo diskordiány vytvořeno jako jednotné číslo množného všezahrnujícího slova Chaos.

Humor

Nedílnou součástí diskordiánské filosofie je humor.

Svoboda

Svoboda je ústřední myšlenkou diskordianismu. Diskordián není vázán žádnými zákony, které sám nepřijme za vlastní. Smí přepisovat svaté diskordiánské texty, vykonávat funkce papeže, smí se chovat jak sám uzná za vhodné a podle svých vlastních pravidel (pokud vůbec nějakých). Pentabarf, soubor pěti přikázání obsažený v princípiích, popírá sám sebe, je tak jen dalším varováním před bezhlavým přijímáním cizích pravidel. Za největší dar od Eris považují diskordiáni svobodu, bez příslibu věčného spasení a bez hrozby věčného zatracení. Diskordianismus nemluví o pekle ani jiných formách trestů či odměn po smrti. Diskordiáni říkávají: „Nejsou žádná pravidla, jen ta která si sám zvolíš. Bohyně vítězí.“

Diskordianismus nemá ani žádné dogma v podobě wiccanského rede (Čiň jak chceš, pokud neškodíš jinému). Přestože diskordiánská bohyně žádný takový zákon na své věřící neuvalila, mnozí ho za svůj přesto svobodně přijali. Protože je to zákon úcty ke svobodě druhých, a svoboda je v diskordianismu posvátná.

Diskordianismus ovšem kategoricky zakazuje pojídat v pátek špekáček. Především jde o špekáček opečený na ohni. V některých interpretacích je to párek v rohlíku. (anglická citace z Principie Discordie: No Hot Dog buns)

Diskordiánský papež

V diskordianismu se titul papež vztahuje ke každému muži, ženě i dítěti na světě. Ve svatém diskordiánském písmu (tzv. Principiích) je vložen certifikát, který lze volně kopírovat, komukoliv věnovat a připomenout mu tak jeho postavení právoplatného papeže. Související poznámka říká: Papež je ten, kdo není podřízen zákonné moci.

Pravomoci papeže

Mezi pravomoci diskordiánského papeže patří (mimo jiné) následující:

   1. Být neomylným, kdykoliv, i zpětně.
   2. Zcela reformovat erisiánskou církev.
   3. Křtít, pohřbívat a oddávat (dva poslední obřady pouze se svolením zemřelých).
   4. Exkomunikovat, deexkomunikovat, reexkomunikovat a dereexkomunikovat sebe, lidi, zvířata, věci i jiné bytosti.
   5. Provádět všechny funkce, obřady a rituály, které se pro diskordiánského papeže považují za nevhodné.

Rituály, obřady

Diskordianistou se člověk může stát v pátek, a to vědomým snědením špekáčku.

Discordianism is a modern religion centered on the idea that chaos is all that there is, and that disorder and order, the former considered a concept distinct from chaos, are both illusions (referred to, respectively, as the "Eristic" and "Aneristic" illusions) that are imposed on chaos. It was founded circa 1958–1959 by Malaclypse the Younger with the publication of its principal text, the Principia Discordia. There is some division as to whether it should be regarded as a parody religion, and if so to what degree. It has been called "Zen for roundeyes", based on similarities with absurdist interpretations of the Rinzai school. Discordianism recognizes chaos, discord, and dissent as valid and desirable qualities, in contrast with most religions, which idealize harmony and order. Eris, the Greek mythological goddess of discord, has also become the matron deity of the religion Discordianism.

It is difficult to estimate the number of followers and correctly identify Discordian groups. There is an encouragement to form schisms and cabals. Additionally, few adherents hold Discordianism as their only or primary faith.

The foundational document of Discordianism is the Principia Discordia, fourth edition, written by Malaclypse The Younger, an alias of Greg Hill. This book contains many references to an earlier source, The Honest Book of Truth (HBT). From the quotations, the HBT seems to be arranged like the Bible, consisting of verses grouped into chapters grouped into books grouped into the HBT itself. The Principia includes a large portion of (or possibly all of) a chapter of "The Book of Explanations" which recounts how the HBT was revealed to Lord Omar Khayyam Ravenhurst. It may be worth noting that the tale of the discovery of the HBT contains many similarities to the tale of the discovery of the Book of Mormon, and that Ravenhurst had been a Mormon. It also includes part of the next chapter, telling how the HBT was taken by a garbage collector, who refused to return it.

Although most religions revere the principles of harmony and order in the Universe, Discordianism can be interpreted as a belief that disharmony and chaos are equally valid aspects of reality. The Principia Discordia often hints that Discordianism was founded as a dialectic antithesis to more popular religions based on order, although the rhetoric throughout the book describes chaos as a much more underlying impulse of the universe. This may have been done with the intention of merely "balancing out" the creative forces of order and disorder, but the focus is certainly on the more disorderly aspects of the world — at times the forces of order are even vilified.

The matron deity of Discordianism is the Greek goddess Eris, of discord, identified by the Romans as Discordia.

In April 2006, Principia Discordia, First Edition was recovered from the John F. Kennedy archives. This contains Malaclypse the Younger's long-sought-for The Myth of Ichabod, more commonly known as The Myth of Starbuck. According to the first edition, this originally appeared in Summa Universalia.

The very idea of a Discordian organization is something of a paradox. Nevertheless, some structure is indicated in Principia Discordia. The most general group, presumably including all Discordians (and potentially others), is The Discordian Society, whose definition is “The Discordian Society has no definition”. Within the society are sects of Discordianism, each under the direction of an “Episkopos” (overseer in Greek, source of English bishop and episcopal).

Discordians who do not form their own sects, whether they belong to someone else's sect or not, make up the Legion of Dynamic Discord, and may be referred to as Legionnaires. Would-be Discordians are told in the Principia Discordia:

The sect of Discordianism founded by Malaclypse the Younger and Omar Khayyam Ravenhurst is known as the Paratheo-Anametamystikhood Of Eris Esoteric (POEE), a Non-prophet Irreligious Disorganisation, and the Principia Discordia tells us much about POEE in particular, as well as Discordianism in general.

For example, the Principia contains some details about the structure of POEE. In particular:

POEE has 5 DEGREES:
There is the neophyte, or LEGIONNAIRE DISCIPLE.
The LEGIONNAIRE DEACON, who is catching on.
An Ordained POEE PRIEST/PRIESTESS or a CHAPLAIN.
The HIGH PRIEST, the Polyfather.
And POEE POPE.

POEE LEGIONNAIRE DESCIPLES are authorized to initiate others as Discordian Society Legionnaires. PRIESTS appoint their own DEACONS. The POLYFATHER ordains Priests. I don't know about the POPES.

According to the Principia Discordia, POEE is “a tribe of philosophers, theologians, magicians, scientists, artists, clowns, and similar maniacs who are intrigued by Eris goddess of confusion and her doings.” Furthermore it states that “POEE subscribes to the Law Of Fives of Omar's sect” and “POEE also recognizes the Holy 23.”

Paratheo-Anametamystikhood can be taken to mean equivalent deity, reversing beyond-mystique. Loosely interpreted, it boils down to all deities are equivalent, there is no great mystery about that.

Some Episkoposes have a one-man cabal. Some work together. Some never do explain.

Episkoposes are the Overseers of sects of Discordianism, who have presumably created their own sect of Discordianism. They speak to Eris through the use of their pineal gland. It is said in the Principia Discordia that Eris says different things to each listener. She may even say radically different things to each Episkopos but, all of what she says is equally her word (even if it contradicts another iteration of her word).

Most Episkoposes have an assumed name and/or title of bizarre nature and self-proclaimed 'mystic import', such as Malaclypse the Younger, Polyfather of Virginity in Gold; Lord Omar Khayym Ravenhurst, Bull Goose of Limbo; Professor Mu-Chao; Kassil the Erratic; and Lord Foxfire the Perpetually Combustible. Some Discordians choose their entire title by themselves, some turn to random generators, others assimilate things from other people, and a few never really offer any explanation.

According to the Principia Discordia, a pope is “every single man, woman, and child on this Earth.”

Included in the Principia Discordia is an official Pope card that may be reproduced and distributed freely to anyone and everyone. Papacy, however, is not granted through possession of this card; it merely informs people that they are “a genuine and authorized Pope” of Discordia.

While the powers of a Pope are not enumerated in the Principia, we are given some idea from a note under the card which states, “A POPE is someone who is not under the authority of the authorities.” Some Discordians have also taken it upon themselves to further elaborate upon the powers of a Pope. On the back of some Pope cards, the following message can be found:

The rights of a Pope include but are not necessarily limited to:
To invoke infallibility at any time, including retroactively.
To completely rework the Erisian church.
To baptise, bury, and marry (with the permission of the deceased in the latter two cases).
To excommunicate, de-ex-communicate, re-ex-communicate, and de-re-ex-communicate (no backsies!) both his-/her-/it-/them-/your-/our-/His-/Her-/It-/Them-/Your-/Our-self/selves and others (if any).
To perform all rites and functions deemed inappropriate for a Pope of Discordia.

The third right (requiring permission from the deceased in cases of burying or marriage, but not baptism) may be a reference to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints practice of baptism for the dead, or it may just be a witty conflation of marriage and death.

This understanding of the notion of Pope has far reaching consequences in Discordianism. For example, the introduction to Principia Discordia says, “Only a Pope may canonize a Saint. … So you can ordain yourself — and anyone or anything else — a Saint.” The last enumerated right of a Pope may be an allusion to the Necessary and Proper Clause.

A female version, with the word Mome substituted for Pope, has also been promulgated.

There are as many interpretations of Discordianism as there are Discordians, and several definitions of Discordianism on the Internet center around the words "Ancient Greeks", "Chaos Worship" and "Anarchism". This is an extremely debatable assertion of what would define Discordian philosophy as a whole. Indeed, it is a notion directly confronted by the concept of the Eristic Illusion, as mentioned in the following passage, a summary of part of the Discordian philosophy which appears in the Principia Discordia:

The Aneristic Principle is that of apparent order; the Eristic Principle is that of apparent disorder. Both order and disorder are man made concepts and are artificial divisions of pure chaos, which is a level deeper than is the level of distinction making.

With our concept making apparatus called "mind" we look at reality through the ideas-about-reality which our cultures give us.

The ideas-about-reality are mistakenly labeled "reality" and unenlightened people are forever perplexed by the fact that other people, especially other cultures, see "reality" differently.

It is only the ideas-about-reality which differ. Real (capital-T) True reality is a level deeper than is the level of concept.

We look at the world through windows on which have been drawn grids (concepts). Different philosophies use different grids. A culture is a group of people with rather similar grids. Through a window we view chaos, and relate it to the points on our grid, and thereby understand it. The order is in the grid. That is the Aneristic Principle.

Western philosophy is traditionally concerned with contrasting one grid with another grid, and amending grids in hopes of finding a perfect one that will account for all reality and will, hence, (say unenlightened westerners) be True. This is illusory; it is what we Erisians call the Aneristic Illusion. Some grids can be more useful than others, some more beautiful than others, some more pleasant than others, etc., but none can be more True than any other.

Disorder is simply unrelated information viewed through some particular grid. But, like "relation", no-relation is a concept. Male, like female, is an idea about sex. To say that male-ness is "absence of female-ness", or vice versa, is a matter of definition and metaphysically arbitrary. The artificial concept of no-relation is the Eristic Principle.

The belief that "order is true" and disorder is false or somehow wrong, is the Aneristic Illusion. To say the same of disorder, is the Eristic Illusion.

The point is that (little-t) truth is a matter of definition relative to the grid one is using at the moment, and that (capital-T) Truth, metaphysical reality, is irrelevant to grids entirely. Pick a grid, and through it some chaos appears ordered and some appears disordered. Pick another grid, and the same chaos will appear differently ordered and disordered.

Reality is the original Rorschach. Verily! So much for all that.

The word Chao (pronounced similarly to "cow") was coined as the singular of chaos. In the Discordian religion the chao is a symbol of the 'pataphysical nature of reality; singular instances of chaos being at the center of 'pataphysical theory. The word is a pun that enables the following quatrain in the Principia Discordia:

To diverse gods

Do mortals bow;

Holy Cow, and

Wholly Chao.

The Sacred Chao is a symbol used by Discordians to illustrate the interrelatedness of order and disorder. It resembles a Yin-Yang symbol, but according to the Principia Discordia:

The Sacred Chao is not the Yin-Yang of the Taoists. It is the Hodge-Podge of the Erisians. And, instead of a Podge spot on the Hodge side, it has a pentagon which symbolizes the Aneristic Principle, and instead of a Hodge spot on the Podge side, it depicts the Golden Apple of Discordia to symbolize the Eristic Principle.

The Sacred Chao symbolizes absolutely everything anyone need ever know about absolutely anything, and more! It even symbolizes everything not worth knowing, depicted by the empty space surrounding the Hodge-Podge.

The choice of the pentagon as a symbol of the Aneristic Principle is partly related to The Pentagon in Virginia near Washington, D.C., partly a nod to the Law of Fives, partially for the Golden Ratio references associated with the pentagon/apple allegory, and wholly for the five-sided pentagon from the "Starbuck's Pebbles" story in the Discordia. The Golden Apple of Discordia is the one from the story of The Original Snub (below).

The Law of Fives is summarized in the Principia Discordia:

The Law of Fives states simply that: All things happen in fives, or are divisible by or are multiples of five, or are somehow directly or indirectly appropriate to 5

Like most of Discordianism, the Law of Fives appears on the surface to be either some sort of weird joke, or bizarre supernaturalism; but under this, it may help clarify the Discordian view of how the human mind works; Lord Omar is quoted later on the same page as having written, "I find the Law of Fives to be more and more manifest the harder I look."

Appendix Beth of Robert Shea's and Robert Anton Wilson's The Illuminatus! Trilogy considers some of the numerology of Discordianism, and the question of what would happen to the Law of Fives if everyone had six fingers on each hand. The authors assert that the real Law of Fives is realizing that everything can be related to the number five if you try hard enough. Sometimes the steps required may be highly convoluted.

Incidentally, the number five appears five times within the quote describing the Law of Fives.

Another way of looking at the Law of Fives is as a symbol for the observation of reality changing that which is being observed in the observer's mind. Just as how when one looks for fives in reality, one finds them, so will one find conspiracies, ways to determine when the apocalypse will come, and so on and so forth when one decides to look for them. It cannot be wrong, because it proves itself reflexively when looked at through this lens.

At its basic level, the Law of Fives is a practical demonstration that perception is intent-sensitive; that is, the percipient's intentions inform the perception. To whatever extent one considers that perception is identical with reality, then, it has the corollary that reality is intent-sensitive.

The Original Snub is the Discordian name for the events preceding the Judgment of Paris, although more focus is put on the actions of Eris. Zeus believes that Eris is a troublemaker, so he does not invite her to Peleus and Thetis's wedding. This is “The Doctrine of the Original Snub”.

Having been snubbed, Eris creates a golden apple with the word kallisti (Ancient Greek: καλλίστῃ, to the prettiest one) inscribed in it. This, the Apple of Discord, is a notable symbol in Discordianism for its inclusion in the Holy Chao. The apple is traditionally described as being made of gold, but the Principia Discordia notes a debate over whether the “gold” described was “metallic gold or Acapulco.” The story also relates that the first thing Eris did after throwing the Apple of Discord into the wedding was to joyously partake of a hot dog which is meant to explain the Discordian prohibition against consuming hot dog buns.

When the female wedding guests disagree about who the apple is meant for, Zeus decides to leave the decision to Paris of Troy. Aphrodite bribes Paris, leading to the Trojan War, which “is said to be The First War among men.”

Some recent interpretations of the Original Snub place Eris as being not at all mischievous with her delivery of the apple, but instead suggest that Eris was simply bringing the apple as a wedding present for Thetis. This interpretation would see Eris as innocent and her causing of chaos as a by-product of the other wedding guests' reaction upon seeing her at the wedding.

The Curse of Greyface is one of the most important parts of Discordianism. It features prominently on several pages of the Principia Discordia. According to the Principia, Greyface was a man who lived in the year 1166 BC and taught that life is serious and play is sin. The curse is a psychological and spiritual imbalance that results from these beliefs.

Greyface encouraged his followers to "Look at all the order around you" (Principia Discordia page 00042) and somehow convinced mankind to agree with his ideas about Serious Order. The Principia notes that it is something of a mystery why Greyface gained so many followers when anyone could have looked at all of the disorder in the world.

Greyface and his followers took the game of playing at life more seriously than they took life itself and were known even to destroy other living beings whose ways of life differed from their own.

By accepting that life is a serious, orderly matter, the followers of Greyface end up viewing things as either orderly or disorderly. In this system, order is preferred to disorder at all costs. This preference results in both constructive order and destructive order.

The alternative is to view things as either constructive or destructive. In this system, construction is preferred to destruction. Selecting construction results in both constructive order and constructive disorder.

In addition to the generic advice of culturing your natural love of chaos and playing with Her, the Principia Discordia provides "The Turkey Curse Revealed by the Apostle Dr. Van Van Mojo" to counteract The Curse of Greyface. The Turkey Curse is designed to counteract destructive order. It derives its name from the fact that the incantation resembles the sounds of a turkey.

The Principia Discordia contains the Law of Eristic Escalation. This law states that Imposition of Order = Escalation of Chaos. It elaborates on this point by saying that the more order imposed the longer it takes for the chaos to arise and the greater the chaos that arises. The idea is not new; it is mentioned in the tao te ching: "the more laws and orders are written, the more thieves there are".

This can be read as an argument against zero tolerance and hard security, or just a statement about the world. It can also be seen as a parallel to the second law of thermodynamics which states that entropy (the number of states a given system can occupy) never decreases over time. It is also reminiscent of Newton's Third Law, where every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

The Pentabarf is the doctrine of Discordianism. It is as follows:
1. There is no Goddess but Goddess and She is Your Goddess. There is no Erisian Movement but The Erisian Movement and it is The Erisian Movement. And every Golden Apple Corps is the beloved home of a Golden Worm.
2. A Discordian Shall Always use the Official Discordian Document Numbering System.
3. The Pentabarf is the most fundamental of all Discordian catma. ("Catma" is a general term for Discordian teachings, sayings, quotations, explanations, jokes and illustrations, as distinguished from Discordian "dogma", which consists of certain specific passages from The Honest Book of Truth, cited in Principia.)

"There is no Goddess but Goddess and She is Your Goddess" is probably a spoof of the Islamic statement of faith: "There is no God but Allah, and Mohammed is Allah's prophet."

The 5th law mirrors both the nature of Taoist sayings ("the Tao that can be spoken of is not the true Tao") and Zen koans ("If you meet the Buddha on your path, kill him"). It is also similar to the end of Wittgenstein's Tractatus (where he essentially states that if his thesis is meaningful then it is worthless), the Epimendes paradox ("All Cretans are liars."), and several other paradoxes.

In the Principia Discordia, "Five tons of flax" is given as the answer to the question, "Is there an essential meaning behind POEE?" (This is a reference to a Zen story about "Three pounds of flax.") Discordians have taken "Five tons of flax" as a slogan or as a universal answer to philosophical questions.[citation needed]

In the Illuminatus! Trilogy by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson, which draws heavily upon Discordianism, "Flaxscript" is depicted as a genuine form of scrip, serving to avoid the use of government-issued currency.

Il Discordianesimo è stato descritto sia come un elaborato scherzo travestito da religione che come una religione travestita da elaborato scherzo. Alcuni dei suoi fedeli affermano che sia "una religione travestita da scherzo travestito da religione". Può essere visto come semplice confutazione del riduzionismo e del dualismo, addirittura del falsificazionismo — non diverso nei concetti dal postmodernismo o da alcune correnti di filosofia della matematica. È anche stato descritto come "Zen per occhi a palla" (fantasiosa traduzione del termine inglese dispregiativo contrapposto a Slant eyes, equivalente al nostro "occhi a mandorla": Round eyes) e converge con alcune delle più assurdiste interpretazioni della scuola Rinzai.

Si dice che il Discordianesimo sia stato fondato nel 1959 (o forse nel 1958) da Greg Hill (conosciuto anche come "Malaclypse il Giovane" o "Mal-2" o, occasionalmente come "L'omnibenevolo polipadre della verginità in oro"/"OPOVIG" - The Omnibenevolent Polyfather of Virginity in Gold) e Kerry Thornley (chiamato anche "Lord Omar Khayyam Ravenhurst"). Il gruppo più generale, presumibilmente comprendente tutti i Discordiani (e potenzialmente anche altri) è La Società Discordiana, la cui definizione è "La Società Discordiana non ha definizione" (Principia Discordia, pagina 00032). All'interno della società ci sono sette di Discordianesimo, ognuna sotto la direzione di un "Episcopo", che riceve istruzioni direttamente da Eris, presumibilmente tramite la sua ghiandola pineale.

- POEE -

La setta del Discordianesimo fondata da Malaclypse il Giovane e Omar Khayyam Ravenhurst è conosciuta come L'ordine parateo-anametamistico dell'esoterica di Eris (POEE, dall'inglese Paratheo-anametamystikhood Of Eris Esoteric); il Principia Discordia parla in specifico di POEE, oltre che del Discordianesimo in generale.

Per esempio, pagina 00022 contiene – oltre che una citazione di Lichtenberg: "Questo libro è uno specchio. Quando una scimmia guarda dentro, nessun apostolo guarda fuori." – alcuni dettagli sulla struttura di POEE. In particolare:

Dalla pagina 00036 del Principia Discordia impariamo che "Un =PAPA= è colui che non è sotto l'autorità delle autorità" e che "Ogni uomo, donna e bambino su questa Terra è un genuino e autorizzato Papa".

Secondo il Principia Discordia è una tribù di filosofi, teologi, maghi, scienziati, artisti, pagliacci e simili maniaci intrigati dalla dea della confusione Eris e dalle sue azioni. Inoltre dichiara che 'il POEE sottoscrive la Legge dei Cinque della sezione di Omar' e 'il POEE riconosce anche il Sacro 23..'. Parateo-anametamistico può essere preso col significato letterale di "equivalente a divintà, contrario e a livello superiore alla mistica."

- Filosofia -

Alle pagine 00049 e 00050 del Principia Discordia appare un sommario della filosofia Discordiana. Segue una citazione estratta dal Principia (All Rites Reversed):
SEGUE UN PO' DI PSICO-METAFISICA
Se non vai matto per la filosofia, probabilmente ti conviene passare oltre.
Il Principio Aneristico è quello dell'ORDINE APPARENTE; il Principio Eristico è quello del DISORDINE APPARENTE. Sia ordine che disordine sono concetti creati dall'uomo e sono suddivisioni artificiali del PURO CAOS, che è a un livello più profondo del livello di questa distinzione.
Con il nostro apparato costruttore di concetti chiamato "mente" guardiamo la realtà attraverso le idee-sulla-realtà che le nostre culture ci tramandano.
Le idee-sulla-realtà sono erroneamente chiamate "realtà" e i non illuminati saranno per sempre stupiti dal fatto che gli altri, specialmente se appartenenti ad altre culture, vedano la "realtà" in modo differente.
Sono solo le idee-sulla-realtà ad essere diverse. La realtà Reale (Vera con la V maiuscola) è a un livello più profondo del livello dei concetti.
Noi guardiamo il mondo attraverso finestre su cui sono disegnate delle griglie (concetti). Filosofie diverse usano griglie differenti. Una cultura è un insieme di persone che usa griglie piuttosto simili. Attraverso una finestra vediamo il caos e lo capiamo confrontandolo con i punti della nostra griglia. L'ORDINE è nella GRIGLIA. Questo è il Principio Aneristico.
La filosofia occidentale è tradizionalmente preoccupata dal contrasto di una griglia con un'altra e sul modificare le griglie nella speranza di trovarne una perfetta che spiegherà l'intera realtà e sarà, quindi, Vera (dicono gli occidentali non illuminati). Tutto questo è mera illusione; è quello che gli Erisiani chiamano ILLUSIONE ANERISTICA. Alcune griglie sono più utili di altre, alcune più belle di altre, alcune più piacevoli di altre, eccetera, ma nessuna può essere più Vera di qualunque altra.
Il DISORDINE è semplicemente informazione non correlata alla griglia attraverso cui viene osservata. Ma come la "relazione", anche la "non relazione" è un concetto. Maschio, come femmina è un'idea riguardo al sesso; dire che la mascolinità è la "assenza di femminilità", o viceversa, è una questione di definizioni ed è metafisicamente arbitrario. Il concetto artificiale di non-relazione è il Principio Eristico.
Il credere che l'ordine è "vero" e il disordine è "falso" o comunque "sbagliato", è l'Illusione Aneristica. Dire lo stesso del disordine è l'Illusione Eristica.
Il punto è che la verità (con la V minuscola) è una questione di definizioni relative alla griglia che si usa al momento e la Verità (con la V maiuscola), realtà metafisica, è totalmente indipendente dalle griglie. Scegli una griglia e attraverso questa parte del caos apparirà ordinato e parte apparirà disordinato. Prendi una griglia diversa e lo stesso caos apparirà ordinato e disordinato in modo differente.
La realtà è il vero Rorschach.

- Cao -

La parola Cao è stata coniata come singolare di caos. Nella religione Discordiana il cao è il simbolo della natura patafisica della realtà; istanze singolari di caos che sono alla base della teoria patafisica.

Il termine è un gioco di parole che rende possibile il seguente distico nei Principia Discordia:
To diverse gods
Do mortals bow;
Holy Cow, and
Wholly Chao.

- Il Sacro Cao -

Il Sacro Cao è un simbolo usato dai discordiani per illustrare la correlazione tra ordine e disordine. Assomiglia ad un simbolo yin yang, ma secondo il Principia Discordia (pagina 00049):
Il Sacro Cao non è lo Yin-Yang dei taoisti. È l'HODGE-PODGE degli Erisiani. E, invece di un pallino Podge sul lato Hodge, esso ha un PENTAGONO che simboleggia il PRINCIPIO ANERISTICO, e invece di un pallino Hodge sul lato Podge, esso presenta la MELA DORATA DELLA DISCORDIA a simboleggiare il PRINCIPIO ERISTICO.

Il Sacro Cao simboleggia assolutamente tutto quanto valga la pena di sapere su qualcunque cosa, ed ancor di più! Simboleggia anche ciò che non vale la pena di sapere, rappresentato dallo spazio vuoto attorno all'Hodge Podge!

La scelta del Pentagono come simbolo del Principio Aneristico è in parte collegata al Pentagono di Washington DC, e in parte alla Legge dei Cinque. La Mela dorata della Discordia è quella menzionata nella storia dell'Affronto Originale (vedi più avanti).

- La Legge dei Cinque -

La Legge dei Cinque è riassunta a pagina 00016 del Principia Discordia:
La Legge dei Cinque dice semplicemente che: TUTTE LE COSE SUCCEDONO A CINQUINE, SONO DIVISIBILI PER O MULTIPLE DI CINQUE, OPPURE SONO IN QUALCHE MODO DIRETTO O INDIRETTO RICONDUCIBILI AL NUMERO CINQUE.
La Legge dei Cinque non è mai sbagliata.
Negli Archivi Erisiani c'è un vecchio promemoria scritto da Omar a Mal-2: "Più a fondo cerco, più manifestazioni della Legge dei Cinque trovo".

Vale la pena notare che la Legge dei Cinque include la parola "cinque" cinque volte.

Come buona parte del Discordianesimo, la Legge dei Cinque può a prima vista sembrare una qualche forma di scherzo perverso o di bizzarro sovrannaturalismo, ma sei si riesce a penetrare nella sua essenza interiore si potrà comprendere il funzionamento della mente umana (o, almeno, come i Discordiani credono che funzioni). Se leggerete con attenzione il promemoria di Omar e come lui trovasse sempre nuovi esempi della Legge dei Cinque avrete la chiave per arrivare a questa comprensione.


Un altro modo di guardare alla Legge dei Cinque è considerarlo un tunnel della realtà, un concetto reso popolare da Robert Anton Wilson. La Legge dei Cinque è simbolica di un principio accettato che distorce la percezione della realtà del credente. Così come uno trova esempi di Legge del Cinque solo quando li cerca, così uno troverà complotti, segnali dell'apocalisse imminente, e così via solo quando deciderà di cercarli. Non potrà errare, perché proverà in maniera riflessiva di aver ragione osservando attraverso questa lente.

L'appendice Beth della Trilogia Illuminatus di R. A. Wilson discute di parte della numerologia del Discordianesimo e si domanda cosa succederebbe alla Legge dei Cinque se ognuno avesse sei dita in ogni mano.

- L'Affronto Originale  -

Al banchetto di nozze di Teti e Peleo, furono invitati tutti gli dei, tranne una: Eris, la dea della discordia. Ciò fece infuriare la dea, che vi portò una mela d'oro sulla quale scrisse καλλίστῃ (=alla più bella) e che fece rotolare nella sala del banchetto. Così tre delle dee invitate, Atena Era ed Afrodite, pretesero la mela. Zeus decise che andava scelto un giudice e nominò Paride. Al ragazzo ogni dea offrì ciò che poteva per corromperlo: Atena gli offrì vittorie eroiche in guerra, Era grandi ricchezze e Afrodite l'amore della donna più bella della terra. Quest'ultima fu scelta da Paride e come promesso, Afrodite manovrò gli eventi terreni affinché Paride potesse avere Elena, che era sposata con Menelao, Re di Sparta. Fu così che scoppiò la guerra di Troia, poiché Sparta rivolle indietro la sua incantevole regina. Il Pomo d'Oro della Discordia è quindi uno dei maggiori simboli associati al Discordianesimo.

- La Maledizione di Grigiaghigna -

La Maledizione di Grigiaghigna è una delle parti più importanti del Discordianesimo. Si può trovare alle pagine 00042 e 00063 del Principia Discordia. Il metodo per combattere la maledizione si trova invece alle pagine 00063 e 00074. Secondo il Principia, Grigiaghigna (conosciuto dagli anglosassoni come Greyface) fu un uomo che visse nel 1166 a.C. e insegnò che la vita è seria e il gioco è peccato. La maledizione è lo sbilanciamento psicologico e spirituale che risulta da queste credenze.

- Ordine/disordine e costruttivo/distruttivo -

Accettando la vita come seria e ordinata, i seguaci di Grigiaghigna finiscono per dividere tutte le cose secondo ordine e disordine. In questo sistema l'ordine viene preferito a tutti i costi al disordine; questo porta ad accettare sia l'ordine costruttivo che l'ordine distruttivo.

L'altra classificazione possibile è secondo costruttivo e distruttivo, considerando preferibile il primo. Questa scelta porta ad accettare tanto l'ordine costruttivo quanto il disordine costruttivo.

- Legge dell'Escalazione Eristica -

Il Principia Discordia contiene, alla pagina 00046, la Legge dell'Escalazione Eristica. Questa legge afferma che Imposizione dell'Ordine = Escalazione del Caos. Questa può essere letta come posizione contraria alla tolleranza zero e all'eccessiva sicurezza o semplicemente come fatto riguardante il mondo. Può anche essere considerata equivalente al secondo principio della termodinamica della fisica.

- Il Pentaconato -

Il Pentaconato (pagina 00004 del Principia) è un insieme di 5 leggi sacre del Discordianesimo:
Non c'è Dea tranne Dea e Lei è la Tua Dea. Non c'è Movimento Erisiano tranne Il Movimento Erisiano ed è Il Movimento Erisiano. E ogni Corpo della Mela D'oro è l'adorata casa di un Verme D'oro.

Per aumentare la confusione sul tema, lo stesso Sistema Ufficiale Discordiano di Numerazione dei Documenti che appariva nella prima, rarissima, edizione, fu omesso nelle successive. Questo sistema utilizza la forma americana di scrittura delle date, piuttosto che il calendario Discordiano ufficiale, che comparve nelle edizioni successive dei Principia.
